First-Time Motorcycle Owner Tips
When you’re fresh to the world of motorcycles, it may seem daunting to figure out what you need to do to be a responsible and safe motorcycle rider. Fortunately, with the right prep work and attention, you can learn what you need to learn and get out on the road to enjoy your new bike. Here are a few tips for first-time motorcycle owners.
1. Locate a Course
Taking a class is a great way to master the basic skills needed to safely ride your motorcycle. Check local listings to find a class near you that fits your schedule and budget. Motorcycle classes typically involve both classroom and hands-on learning, so you'll get plenty of information on the rules of the road, as well as invaluable experience riding under the supervision of your instructor, who can guide or correct your riding as needed.
2. Buy & Wear Safety Gear
You’ve probably seen a reckless motorcyclist on their bike in a short-sleeved T-shirt and no helmet, but this is not the safe way to ride. Motorcycles can be extremely dangerous, especially since you’re exposed to the air and liable to be thrown in the event of any type of accident. So you have to armor yourself to prevent serious injuries or even death.
A well-fitting, DOT-rated motorcycle helmet with either a full face mask or a pair of goggles is necessary to protect your head and eyes while you ride. Replace your helmet every five years or after any type of impact. You should also invest in a set of riding pants and a jacket, or a one-piece riding suit with the padding necessary to protect your limbs if you slide out or end up on the pavement. Gloves and boots are other good additions to your ensemble.
3. Put in Practice
No one is ever good at anything on the first try, and motorcycle riding is no different. To ensure that you’re maintaining and honing your riding skills, you should practice often. Having a more experienced friend offer you guidance or tips can be useful. You can practice your riding skills in an empty parking lot.
