Motorcycle Riding Etiquette
When you’re new to riding motorcycles, you have a lot to learn. While there are plenty of well-documented laws and regulations around riding, there are also some more hidden “unofficial” guidelines that experienced motorcyclists will expect you to learn and follow. These guidelines take the form of etiquette, in that following them lets you show respect to fellow riders. Here’s what you should know.
Never Touch or Ride Someone Else’s Motorcycle
Without getting the owner’s express permission, you should never touch their bike or attempt to climb on it or, worse, ride it. A motorcycle is an expensive and prized possession to most people and if you’re polite, you will treat others’ bikes with respect. You can look all you want, but make sure to ask before you lay a single finger on someone else’s bike.
Acknowledge Other Motorcyclists
When riding, you may see motorcyclists pass you in the other direction, and you should give them a wave or at least a nod of your head. This is just a nice way to acknowledge your fellow motorcycle enthusiasts, since you’re part of a special group. Also, if you ever see a rider tap their helmet, this means you should slow down, since there’s probably a cop up ahead waiting to catch you in a speed trap. Try to give other riders this same courtesy if you pass a speed trap.
Ride Responsibly
Finally, a polite and respectful motorcyclist will not do anything to sully the reputation of motorcycle riders. This means that you should always ride while alert and sober and never under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs. You should also follow road rules and avoid speeding, riding on the shoulder, or weaving through traffic.
