It’s perfectly fun to ride your motorcycle solo. But what about adding a passenger? Your friend, cousin, partner, or neighbor might enjoy a ride with you. Also, if you want to use your motorcycle for long-distance traveling, having a passenger along for the trip will make it more fun. However, there are some things to keep in mind when you’re planning to add a passenger to your motorcycle.

Put in Some Practice

If you’re brand-new to riding motorcycles, you need to ride them solo for now. Only a moderately experienced rider will be able to handle the needs of a passenger. The weight of a passenger changes how your motorcycle moves, which means that you have to be able to change how you ride, which will be hard for a beginner to do. So, in order to keep yourself and everyone safe, only add a passenger when you’re confident in your riding skills.

Prepare Your Bike

Your motorcycle also needs to be properly maintained and in good condition before you add a passenger. Keeping up with regular maintenance tasks will ensure that your motorcycle is less liable to break down on you when you add a passenger to it. If you need assistance with motorcycle maintenance, contact the Desperado Harley-Davidson® service department to schedule an appointment.

Educate Your Passenger

Whoever is riding on your motorcycle with you should be educated in how to ride. They’ll need their own helmet and riding gear to keep them safe, too. Let your passenger know that they’ll need to lean into turns with you and keep a hold of your waist to stay balanced. You should also establish some hand signals that you can use to alert them to changes and for them to let you know if you should pull over.
