Road Hazards to Avoid on Your Motorcycle
While riding your motorcycle is fun and enjoyable no matter the time of year, it’s important to remember that it can also be dangerous if you’re not aware and alert while you ride. Road hazards are everywhere, and they can also spring up at random when you’re not expecting them to, so you need to be on your guard.
Also, many road hazards are much more dangerous to a motorcyclist who is exposed to the open air than they are to a car or truck driver that is more protected. Here are some of the most common road hazards that can do harm to motorcycle riders.
Ruts & Potholes
Many municipalities attempt to keep their roads maintained, but heavy traffic and weather damage can take a real toll on asphalt. This wear and tear leads to the formation of ruts from car tires and potholes, where portions of the pavement crumble and sink into the ground beneath. Both of these hazards can cause your front tire to swivel, sending you sliding out across the road, and they can be harder to see in the dark or in bad weather.
Construction Work
Road construction is a fact of life, and many construction crews who are working on repairing those ruts and potholes and other issues use steel plates to cover portions of the road under progress. However, the slick surface of these metal plates can cause your bike to lose traction, so you need to be careful when riding over them, particularly if the roads are wet.
