Being a responsible motorcycle rider means staying on top of regular maintenance tasks. Your motorcycle can’t function properly if you neglect its needs, which can lead to you having a breakdown that strands you on the side of the road. You could even end up getting into an accident on a poorly-maintained bike. Here’s what to do to maintain your motorcycle.

1. Read Your Owner’s Manual

The owner’s manual that came with your motorcycle has lots of useful information on how to keep your motorcycle in good condition. You’ll find recommendations for products to use and timeframes to perform various upkeep tasks. Keep it handy so that you can refer to it as needed.

2. Check Your Tires

Both of your motorcycle’s tires take a lot of abuse from the road, so you need to keep an eye on their pressure and condition. Check the psi levels with a tire-pressure gauge and air them up as needed. You’ll also want to examine each tire’s treads to make sure they are still sufficient, with no bald patches.

3. Change the Oil & Filters

Regular oil changes ensure that your motorcycle’s engine has clean, fresh oil to lubricate all of its parts. You’ll also want to change the oil and air filters at the same time to prevent particulates from entering the engine’s inner workings.

4. Test Brakes & Lights

Turning on your motorcycle and doing a quick test ride around the block allows you the opportunity to test the lights and signals and brakes. You don’t want any of these features to fail you on the road, so checking them while you’re close to home is safer.
