Maintaining Your Motorcycle Chain
There are many parts of your motorcycle that need regular maintenance in order for the bike to function correctly at all times. One crucial and often overlooked part is the chain, which requires a little special attention to keep it working. The chain is part of what transfers the power between your motorcycle’s engine to its wheels. Here are our tips on how to maintain your motorcycle chain.
Inspection
At least every two weeks or every 500 miles, depending on how often you ride, you should take the time to inspect the chain. Pull it up and down by an inch or so to determine whether the chain needs to be loosened and tightened. You can slowly roll your motorcycle forward to allow the chain to move through it for a full inspection.
Check the sprockets on the chain as well, since their teeth need to fit into the chain in order for the whole system to work. Replace any worn sprockets to prevent the chain from breaking down.
Cleaning & Lubricating
You should check the owner’s manual for specific products to use, but in general, you’ll need a chain cleaner and a lubricant, along with a brush and a towel. An old toothbrush can work.
Soak the chain in the cleaner and use your brush to scrub off all build-up. Let the chain air-dry or towel it off. Spray on your chain lubricant while rotating the tire in order to coat the whole chain on all sides. Wipe off your excess lubricant and let it set before you adjust the chain tension again.
