How to Maintain Your Motorcycle’s Brakes
While it’s important that your motorcycle is able to move, it’s far more important that it’s able to come to a stop. A bike that can’t start won’t hurt anyone (although it is useless), but a bike that can’t stop is a disaster. The brakes on your motorcycle should be regularly inspected, especially if they start to behave strangely. Here are some things to look out for when it comes to maintaining your motorcycle brakes.
Pulsing or Squealing
The brakes may make strange noises or feel odd as you activate them; this is generally indicative of a problem that needs to be addressed. If the brakes pulse when you apply them, the discs may have become overheated and begun to warp, requiring a rotor replacement. If the brakes start squealing or grinding, especially when you brake hard, the linings may be worn out. You also may be low on brake fluid, which should be flushed at least once every few years, if not once every year, since it tends to absorb moisture with time and become less effective.
Worn Brake Pads
The brake pads on your motorcycle should not wear down too quickly, and if they seem to be doing so, you should inspect the caliper piston or sliders to make sure that they’re properly lubricated and not sticking in place. A high-temperature silicone brake grease should be used. It’s generally best to have a professional replace brake pads and flush out brake fluid.
