Riding Your Motorcycle at Night
No matter what, you’re going to end up riding your motorcycle at night at some point. While it’s preferable and safer to ride during the day, there may be times when this simply isn’t possible. As a motorcyclist riding after dark, you have to be extremely careful to keep yourself out of a dangerous accident. Here are some ways you can stay safe.
Remain Visible
Visibility is the most important factor in night riding. The darkness combined with the gray pavement makes you very hard to see, so you have to do whatever you can to stand out for motorists. Wear light-colored reflective riding gear or add reflective tape to your darker riding gear, including your helmet. You can also add this tape to your motorcycle, in addition to adding extra LED lights along the sides of it.
Ride Defensively
Car and truck drivers at night will be tired, unfocused, distracted, or even intoxicated, all of which create a dangerous situation for you as a motorcyclist. You’re in much more danger of injury or death in an accident than they are, so you unfortunately have to be on your guard. Scan the road ahead for any swerving drivers or obstacles in your road and give them a wide berth. Also, be aware of animals that may leap into the road out of nowhere.
