If you’re new to the world of riding motorcycles with a fresh-off-the-assembly-line Harley-Davidson® motorcycle sitting in your garage, then welcome! You have a lot to learn in order to become a more experienced rider who is confident on any road. One of the things that will help you to make friends and feel like you’re part of the “in” crowd is learning motorcycle slang. Just like any other group, such as truckers, motorcyclists have their own jargon that you should get the hang of to communicate with other riders effectively.

Bike Parts

Ape-Hangers - A style of handlebar found on cruiser motorcycles in particular that has the user’s arms hanging down as they grip the handlebars, which are high up.

Fairings - The parts of the bike that help protect and shield your legs and torso from engine heat.

Lifestyle

AMA - Stands for “American Motorcycle Association,” which is the group that motorcyclists can join to participate in rides and other events and meet other enthusiasts.

Cager - A driver of a car (“cage”), but not in a nice way. Usually said about a careless driver who gets in your way.

Hoon - Short for “hooligan,” this is not a good term to be called. It describes a rider who is careless and showy, trying to perform tricks at the expense of their own and other’s safety. If someone calls you a hoon, you probably need some riding lessons and some patience.
